Military historical tour introduces the travelers to the heroic life of Zaporozhian Cossacks.
The emergence of Ukrainian Cossacks is attributed to the 14th century when the Southern steppes of Ukraine were ruled by Polish - Lithuanian State. For 250 years the Cossacks were playing a significant part in the history of Ukraine.
The word "Cossack" is of Turkic origin and means "a guard", but the Ukrainian people gave it a connotation of "a knight", "a brave defender".
The Cossacks constituted military outpost between the Turks and Tatars on one side and the Poles on the other, they were a real living barrier protecting the entire Rus' nation and withstood all the attacks both on the part of the Muslim Crimea, Turkey and Catholic Poland.
In 1540 Prince Dmitro Vyshnevetsky united dispersed groups of Cossacks and founded on Hortytsa Island (below the Dnipro (Dnieper) Rapids in the territory of contemporary Zaporizhzhya) a military Cossack organization Zaporiz'ka Sich which subsequently became the capital of an independent Cossack republic.
The life of the Cossacks in Zaporiz'ka Sich was simple and austere: there were no women, no families, they lived in a military camp. Zaporozhian Cossacks were headed by a Hetman who was elected by them and given unlimited power.
Successful Crimean campaigns made the Cossack glory reach even Europe, and Cossacks made their neighbors consider them an important military and political force.
Zaporizhzhya Cossacks formed the basis of Ukrainian troops in the War of the Ukrainian people against Poland under the leadership of Bohdan Khmelnytsky, took part in the anti-Moscow uprising of Hetman Ivan Mazepa. Russia, intensifying offensive against the autonomy of the Ukraine in 1709, eliminated the Sich.
